Cannabis Indica - responsible for all those classic tropes (couchlock, munchies and the occasional bout of uncontrollable giggles) that most non-stoners associate with ‘getting high’, and the backbone of so many legendary strains.

But not all Indicas are created equal, and when it comes to the heavyweights of the weed world, the strongest Indica options are the Tyson's, the Fury’s, and even the Ali’s of the bunch. Packing truly ridiculous levels of THC, and terpenes profiles fit to make any seasoned smoker drool, these are the seeds that separate the tough from the weak, the real stoners from the tourists.

Characteristics of Indica cannabis

Indica cultivars come with three main characteristics that set their effects apart from their Sativa dominant kin. That is, a bag full of mental relaxation, deep sedation, and heavy physical effects. Perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon in the park and often prescribed to medical cannabis patients as their nighttime option, Indica-dominant strains offer up that classic 'couchlock' effect.

In terms of appearance, you can expect cultivars with a heavier Indica presence to grow not much higher than five feet, with thick stalks and dense foliage. They have larger leaves than Sativa options and take less time to flower (usually between 8 and 12 weeks).

And then there are the buds themselves. We all love a dense, almost rock-hard bud, and this is what Indica plants will push out, especially when grown to perfection.  They are usually a little smaller than Sativa buds (but not always), but their compact and dense nature, plus the ridiculous amount of trichomes, makes up for the size.

The role of THC in potency

Potency can mean many things to many people, but really, it all comes down to the THC content.

Sure, we could dive into the 'entourage effect' or talk in detail about the full cannabinoid profile of a particular cultivar, but when it comes to strength, it's THC that really counts.

One question I hear all the time is, "Surely CBD has a role to play in the potency, right?"

Nope, not at all. In fact, CBD is there to take the edge off. Current research shows that CBD will reduce the psychoactive effects of THC, but this is not to say that CBD does not have an important role to play.

So, what is potency to you?

To us, it's the THC content, pure and simple.

Medical benefits

THC has been shown to offer a huge range of medical benefits, all thanks to its ability to interact with the body endocannabinoid system (ECS).

Getting into the ins and outs of this fascinating network is beyond the scope of this article, but in summary, when you consume a high THC cultivar like those found above, you flood your CB1 receptors (located in the brain and central nervous system) with THC, which, thanks to a host of mechanisms, will set off a chain reaction resulting in different medical benefits.

Some of these include:

  • Pain reduction: The sedative and analgesic properties of THC make it a popular choice for those seeking natural alternatives to traditional pain medications. It has been shown to be effective in managing both chronic and acute pain.
  • Anxiety and stress relief: Indica strains are known for their ability to calm the mind and promote relaxation, making them a popular choice for those dealing with anxiety and stress. Keep in my that high doses of THC can spike anxiety levels in some patients, so if you are new to cannabis or have a lower tolerance, start slow.
  • Insomnia alleviation: The sedative effects of Indica strains can be particularly beneficial for those struggling with insomnia or other sleep issues. These strains can help induce a deep, restful sleep, with patients falling asleep faster and staying asleep longer.
  • Nausea reduction: High THC strains, particularly Indica-dominant ones, have been shown to be effective in reducing nausea and increasing appetite. This makes them a popular choice for patients suffering from heavy side effects of chemotherapy or other treatments.
  • Muscle spasm support: The muscle-relaxing properties of THC can provide relief for those suffering from muscle spasms and related conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis.
  • Appetite stimulation: The infamous 'munchies' effect of THC can be beneficial for those struggling with a lack of appetite, such as patients undergoing chemotherapy or individuals with eating disorders.
  • Mood enhancement: The euphoria-inducing effects of THC can help boost mood and alleviate symptoms of depression or other mental health conditions.

That said, the above should not be taken as medical advice. If you are considering using cannabis for medical purposes, please first reach out to your healthcare provider to discuss potential risks and benefits for your specific condition.

How to choose the right Indica Strain for you

Consider your tolerance level

Your personal tolerance to THC will play a significant role in the strain you choose. If you are new to the wonderful world of weed and have a lower tolerance or are prone to heavy bouts of anxiety, it's probably best to start with strains that have a slightly lower THC content, or even one with a balance of THC to CBD.

This will help you ease into the effects of THC and allow your body to slowly adapt. Once you are more comfortable, you can carefully work your way up to stronger Indica strains.

If you're a stoner from way back and love nothing more than pushing your personal boundaries, then by all means go for the big guns and try out some of the strongest Indica strains listed above.

Purpose of consumption (recreational vs. medicinal)

This is a big one. The rise of medical cannabis treatment globally in the past few years has been nothing short of meteoric, with millions of people now using cannabis to treat a variety of conditions.

  • If you are considering using cannabis medicinally, please do not take any of the information here as medical advice, and always seek the guidance of a specialist doctor who has experience with both treating your specific condition and prescribing cannabis treatment options.
  • If you are using cannabis recreationally, consider what you want to get out of your experience. Are you looking for deep body relaxation? Relief from stress and anxiety? Or a boost to morning energy levels? Knowing your desired effects can help guide you towards the right strain.

Understanding terpene profiles

The research into everyone's favorite plant has increased exponentially over the past decade, and with it, our understanding of the compounds that give cannabis their unique taste, smell, and even effects.

Terpenes, long thought of as just the aroma bringing chemicals in cannabis, are now known to play a significant role in the overall effects of different strains. Research has shown that terpenes can interact with cannabinoids like THC and CBD, enhancing or counteracting their effects.

We won't go into too much detail here, but we always give a full rundown of the terpenes contained in each strain on the menu, so be sure to check that out before making any decision.

Growing Strong Indica Strains

a man planting cannabis seedlings into black plant pots

Growing a banging crop of Indica plants is probably easier than you think. They require a little less TLC than most Sativa most and can generally be more resilient to pests and diseases.

Here are a few quick tips for growing the best Indica plants possible.

Environmental requirements

The OG Indica's all hail from the rugged, mountainous regions of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Nepal, etc. - The natural environment where these plants evolved is a little cooler, drier, and harsher than the tropical regions where Sativa strains originate.

  • Temperature: Indica strains thrive in an ambient temperature of around 70 to 80°F (21°C - 27°C). They can handle temperatures a little higher and a little lower, but prolonged exposure to extreme temps isn't recommended.
  • Humidity: Indica strains prefer a lower humidity level than Sativa - aim for around 60% for the first two weeks, and then drop it down to below 55%. High humidity can lead to mold and mildew growth on your plants, which you definitely don't want.

Cultivation tips for maximum potency

If max THC is your number one priority, then it is very hard to go past hydroponics, aeroponics, or any other form of soil-less growing.

These methods allow you to precisely control the nutrients that the plants receive and will help ensure your plants are getting exactly what they need to produce the most resin-rich buds possible. Growth will be more explosive, and flowering times will be shorter on average.

Stay on top of the pH and TDS (or EC) levels within your reservoir, and always make sure to flush the plants before harvest.

Harvest timing and potency

The only way to be 100% sure when to harvest your Indica plants is to use a microscope and check the trichomes. This will give you an accurate idea of how much THC, CBD, etc., is present in each plant.

For maximum potency, look to pull your plants when the trichomes are about 70% milky/white and 30% amber.
