Weed jargon is a world of its own, and for those new to the cannabis community, it can be pretty confusing.
A whole new set of words and measurements is introduced when talking about everyone's favourite plant. ScrOG, Sativa, 420, autoflower, kief, and edibles all sound like a foreign language to the uninitiated.
But fear not, we are here to help decode the weed enigma and answer one of the most common questions - "How many grams is an eighth of weed”.
How many grams is in an eighth?
If you're buying from trusted sources, then you should be able to count on an 'eighth' being bang on 3.5 grams. But if you are sourcing your green sticky-icky from less reputable means, you may find that an eighth can range anywhere from 2.5 to 3.5 grams.
Why is it called an eighth of weed?
It’s simple - 3.5 grams equals exactly an eighth of an ounce.
Wait a second, why are we mixing imperial and metric measurements?
The answer lies in the history of weed culture. We can thank the good old USA for this one. A confused and confusing place in many ways (joking - we love the States and everything it has done to promote everyone's favourite plant, both recreationally and medicinally), the USA uses an imperial system for measuring marijuana.
We all know that the USA is a trendsetter, and other countries have followed suit. However, in many parts of the world, and as weed has become legal, the metric system is used to measure weed - making the 'eight' redundant, and a simple 3.5 grams will suffice.
How much should an eighth of weed cost?
How long is a piece of string?
There is no way to really answer this one, as the price of weed fluctuates dramatically depending on location, quality, and legality. The price of an eighth can also vary depending on whether you are buying from a dispensary or a street dealer.
In states where weed is legal, the average cost for an eighth ranges from $30 to $60. However, this price can be affected by taxes, overhead costs, and other factors.
In areas where weed is still illegal, the cost of an eighth can range anywhere wildly. In London, you're going to have to fork out around $60 USD for an eighth, but in more rural areas, it can be much cheaper.
In Sydney, the historical price for an eighth will set you back $50 AUD, but skip over to Perth, and that price almost doubles.
In Thailand, with recreational weed becoming a legal reality, the price of an eighth will be determined by market forces, but the price is usually a little lower than most in Western countries. Buying your bud from a tourist hotspot will generally run you around $30 USD, but again, quality comes into play heavily.
How long should an eighth of weed last you?
Anywhere between 1 day and a few months, depending on how much weed you like to smoke.
You might be a medical patient that needs to medicate with high-quality marijuana every day, and an eighth might only last a couple of days. On the other hand, you could be someone who only smokes for fun once in a while - in this case, an eighth will last a much longer period.
And then potency and tolerance also need to be taken onto account. The more potent the strain, the less you will need to get your desired effects. But if you have a high tolerance or are consuming large amounts of the golden ganga at a time, you will likely go through an eighth quicker.
How many joints can you make from an eighth?
1, 2, 5, 10, maybe even 20. The choice is yours. You could roll 50 tiny little, itty-bitty, baby joints if that's what floats your boat.
Do you roll fat blunts with no tobacco?
Then don't expect to get too many joints out of an eighth. maybe 4 if you're lucky.
If you're rolling skinny pinners, then you can probably expect to get up to 10 to fifteen joints out of an eighth.
If you like to mix tobacco with your weed, then you are going to get way more joints but also way more chance of addiction and a much higher risk of premature death. - so be careful
Everyone has their own personal style when it comes to rolling joints, and the amount you get will depend on how much weed you like to pack in.
What are common measurements of weed?
Again, this can change depending on where you live, but most English-speaking areas do use the following terms when weighing up a bit of the green.
Quarter
Another common term, and the next step up from an eighth. A quarter refers to a quarter of an ounce or 7 grams.
Ounce
An ounce is the largest bag of weed that most stoners ever see (unless you like to grow your own, in which case, an ounce is child's play).
An ounce of weed weighs out at 28 grams, even though a true 'ounce' is 28.3495 grams. We do not recommend trying to pull up your local weed man on the missing .3 of a gram, though...
Four-pack
A four-pack is what it sounds like - four ounces of weed. A common term throughout the East Coast of the USA, a four-pack is usually much cheaper than buying four ounces separately.
A four-pack weighs out to four ounces or 112 grams.
Pound
Moving up in weight, we have the almighty pound!
A pound equals 16 ounces. And that equates to about 454 grams of weed.
Key
If you're feeling adventurous and have a hell of a lot of friends who like to get high like you, then you can buy a kilo of weed (depending on where you live).
A Key of weed is 1000 grams of the good stuff.
Zip
A zip of weed is slang for 28 grams or one ounce.
Dub
A dub of weed is slang for a $20 bag of weed, "dub" being short for 'double' as in double a $10 bag. Dub bags usually weigh between 1-2 grams depending on the price of weed in your region.
Dime
A dime of weed is slang for a $10 bag. It normally weighs around 1 gram depending on where you are.
